If you live in fear of a bed bug infestation, you’re not alone. And being afraid of bed bugs does not mean you’re irrational; these tiny pests make themselves at home in houses, hotels, businesses and other public or private spaces. So, how can you tell if bed bugs have taken over your Phoenix-area home? Look for these clues.
Where Bed Bugs Hide
Bed bugs are sneaky; they like crevices, nooks and crannies. Their nearly microscopic size makes it even harder to spot them. If you suspect an infestation, inspect these bedroom furnishings:
- mattresses
- chairs and sofas
- bed frames and headboards
Shine a flashlight or other bright light on the corners, seams and any gaps in your furniture. You may spot actual bed bugs, which are brown, or reddish-brown after feeding, and only about a fifth of an inch long.
Other Signs of Bed Bugs
In addition to live bed bugs, you may spot their oval-shaped, molted brown skin or their eggs. Bed bug eggs are barrel-shaped, white-ish, and the size of a speck of dirt. Droppings also offer another clue to the existence of bed bugs; in this case, you’ll see tiny black marks, often on sheets or other bedding. If these parasites have been feeding on you, you may find little reddish-brown marks on your mattress or other furniture.
What to Do if You Have Bed Bugs
If you do see signs of these diminutive invaders, don’t try to take them on; this is a job for pest-control professionals. DIY bed bug treatments can be ineffective or even dangerous; at best, you’ll waste money, and at worst, you’ll put yourself and your family at risk.
